Custom Wine Rooms and Cellars Designed, Built, and Installed in North Carolina

Heritage Millworks is a wine room builder and manufacturer serving North and South Carolina. Every room we build is designed around your space, your collection, and your storage goals — with every component fabricated in our North Carolina facility and installed by the same team that built it.

Custom wine rooms and cellars range from compact collector's displays to full climate-controlled storage rooms that maintain the precise temperature and humidity conditions that allow wine to age correctly over years or decades. Whatever the scale of your project, the design, the fabrication, and the installation all need to work as a single coordinated process. Heritage Millworks handles all three in-house, which means the team making your design decisions is also the team building and installing the room.

A few things that define every Heritage Millworks wine room project:

Clients receive and approve a full 3D rendering before fabrication begins; what you approve is what gets built

CNC fabrication — using computer-controlled equipment — produces components that fit precisely and consistently across every section of the room

How a Heritage Millworks Wine Room Project Works

Every custom wine cellar project follows a defined process from first conversation through installation. The stages below cover how a project moves from an idea about your space to a finished, functioning wine room.

Design Consultation

We start with a conversation about your space, your collection, and what you want the room to accomplish. That includes the physical dimensions of the space you have chosen, the current and intended size of your collection, your preferred materials and finish direction, and any architectural features — an existing staircase, a basement footprint, a dedicated room — that will shape what is possible. This conversation is the foundation of the entire project.

3D Rendering and Client Approval

Our team models your wine room in full 3D using design-to-manufacturing software. This produces a detailed three-dimensional visual of the completed room — racking layout, materials, dimensions, and finish — that you can review from multiple angles before any fabrication begins. We do not move forward until you have reviewed and approved the rendering. The approved design becomes the direct input for our fabrication process, so the rendering is not a reference image — it is the actual model from which every component will be produced.

Wine Rack System and Material Selection

Wine racks come in a range of configurations: individual bottle slots, diamond bins that store bottles in stacked groups, display rows that position bottles label-forward for easy selection, and horizontal case storage for unopened cases. Most rooms use a combination, and the
right layout depends on how your collection is composed and how

frequently you access different selections. We discuss configuration options during the design consultation and build the rack layout directly into the 3D model before approval.

Our wine rack systems page covers the full range of configurations and materials in detail.

Cooling System Specification

A cellar designed for long-term wine storage requires active climate control to maintain the temperature and humidity levels that allow wine to age correctly over time. The standard storage range is 55 to 58 degrees Fahrenheit with relative humidity held between 60 and 70 percent. We work with Climate Consultants to specify the right cooling unit for your room's size, insulation level, and heat load — the amount of heat the cooling system needs to offset given the room's surroundings. Cooling unit selection happens during the design phase so that the unit and its installation requirements are integrated into the room design from the start. Our cooling systems page covers unit types, how they are sized, and how the integration works.

CNC Fabrication

Once the design is approved and all systems are specified, fabrication begins in our Troutman, NC facility. CNC stands for computer numerical control — fabrication equipment that uses precise digital instructions to cut, shape, and mill wood components to exact dimensions. The approved design file is translated directly into fabrication instructions, which means every component is produced to your approved specification at every joint, every dimension, and every profile. All cabinetry components use dowel-pin joinery — a construction method in which parts are connected using precisely placed cylindrical wood pegs rather than staples or bracket hardware — for strength and long-term stability.

Installation

Our installation team delivers the fabricated components to your site and completes the room. Because the same team designed and built every piece, installation decisions are made by people who already understand the full project. Cooling unit installation is coordinated during this phase. The completed room is the room you approved in the design rendering, installed and functioning.

What a Heritage Millworks Wine Room Project Covers

The four sections below correspond to the primary components of every wine room project. Each links to a dedicated page with full detail on that topic.

See Outdoor Spaces

Deck Building & Porches

Outdoor spaces play an important role for homeowners throughout Anne Arundel County, especially in waterfront and neighborhood-focused communities. Whether building a new deck near Edgewater or upgrading a porch in Severna Park, we create outdoor spaces designed around comfort, durability, and long-term use.

Wine Cellar Design and Planning

The design phase brings your space, collection size, material preferences, and climate requirements together into a room that functions precisely as intended. Our design and planning page covers how we approach the design process, what we need from you at the start of the project, and how the 3D rendering review and approval process works in practice.

Custom Wine Rack Systems

Rack configuration has a direct impact on how a room functions day to day. Bottle-slot racking, diamond bins, display rows, and case storage each serve a different purpose, and most rooms benefit from a combination. Our wine rack systems page covers the full range of configurations we build, the wood species and materials available, and how we approach rack layout during the design phase.

Wine Cellar Cooling Systems

Active cooling systems maintain the conditions that allow wine to age correctly and consistently over time. Selecting the right unit depends on your room's dimensions, its insulation, and the heat load from surrounding spaces. Our cooling systems page explains how units are selected and sized, the practical differences between the main cooling unit types, and how cooling integration fits into our design and fabrication process.

Frequently Asked Questions About Custom Wine Rooms in NC

  • Who builds custom wine rooms in North Carolina?

Heritage Millworks designs, fabricates, and installs custom wine rooms and cellars for homeowners, architects, and contractors across North and South Carolina. Every phase of the project — design, fabrication, and installation — is handled in-house from our facility in Troutman, NC. There are no outsourced components or third-party installation crews involved.

  • What does custom wine cellar design and installation in Charlotte involve?

A custom wine cellar project begins with a design consultation to assess the space, collection size, and material preferences. Heritage Millworks then produces a 3D rendering for your review and approval, specifies the cooling system appropriate for the room's size and conditions, fabricates every component in our North Carolina facility, and completes the installation. The full process is outlined in the step-by-step section above.

  • What is the difference between a wine room and a wine cellar?

The terms are often used interchangeably, but there is a practical distinction. A wine cellar is a climate-controlled space designed to maintain the temperature and humidity conditions necessary for long-term wine aging — typically 55 to 58 degrees Fahrenheit with humidity between 60 and 70 percent. A wine room is a broader term that can include display-oriented spaces without active climate control, used for short-to-medium-term storage rather than extended aging. Heritage Millworks builds both, and the design consultation is where we clarify which approach fits your collection and your goals.

  • Is Heritage Millworks the manufacturer, or do you source wine room components from a supplier?

Heritage Millworks is the manufacturer. Every component is designed and fabricated in our Troutman, NC facility. We do not source components from West Coast kit suppliers or third-party fabricators, which means your project is built to your approved design on a production schedule we control directly.

  • What areas in North and South Carolina do you serve for wine room installation?

Our installation service area covers Charlotte, Raleigh, and Wilmington in North Carolina, and Greenville and Kiawah Island for clients seeking a custom wine cellar contractor in South Carolina. We also take projects in Knoxville, TN and surrounding East Tennessee, and ship finished wine room components nationwide for clients outside our installation footprint.

  • How do I find out if my budget is realistic before scheduling a consultation?

Two options: request the Wine Room Buyer Guide through our contact form, or visit our wine room cost guide for general pricing context by project scope. Both give you a useful frame of reference before your first conversation with our team.
